Fifth Grade Weekly Update

9/18/2017 - 9/22/2017

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS: The children will continue reviewing skills with their in class texts.  They will also begin the steps to writing a great narrative. (This is a fiction story.)

*The verb packet homework is due this FRIDAY, 9/22! Please remember to turn in your homework and use your opportunity class time wisely. Most children are able to complete ALL of their packet during the school day.  After your third intramural detention you will be issued an in-school suspension.

*For the month of October the children will be reading a book and completing a project for their daily homework.

MATH:  This week in math, we will begin to practice whole number multiplication.  We will start by multiplying by a 1-digit factor and work our way up to 3-digit factors.  There will be a quiz on Friday.  We will begin division towards the end of the week.

Technology was introduced into our math rotations last week.  Students did very well logging in and getting straight to work on the assignments!

Homework will be assigned on a daily basis!  Math homework should be completed independently.  If your child is struggling with homework, please let me know.

SCIENCE: This week in science we are continuing our exploration of food webs for our new unit on life science. We will be learning about how energy flows through the food web, and identifying "what does it eat," and "what is it eaten by?"
Our life science unit will take us through the end of the first 9 weeks, and into the beginning of the next. We will be having "check point quizes" throughout the unit, so watch for these dates as they come up!

On Wednesday, there will be a quiz over finding relative location and using latitude and longitude lines to find absolute location. Students have notes (pink handout) with terms they need to know for the quiz in their binder.

This week, students will read climate maps and make generalizations about the climate using observations about the location. They will compare the climate of different cities with different latitudes. Students will also study the second theme of geography, place as we discuss physical and human characteristics found in various places around the world.

The first fundraiser turn-in date is tomorrow, Tuesday, September 19th.

Lifetouch School Pictures will be taken tomorrow, Tuesday, September 19th. Don’t forget your picture form and your smile! J

Please stay up-to-date with homework assignments and your child’s progress by checking Progress Book regularly.  If you have trouble logging in or need a password, please contact our school office.
