Hello and welcome to the Chippewa Intermediate School General Music Page!

Mrs. Madonna is the music teacher here and she is currently having a wonderful time working with your children!  She moved to the Akron area  from Columbus, OH after graduating from Ohio University in 2013.  After being a part of different music organizations for more than 16 years, she is excited to teach your children what all music can do for them!

Grade Level Overviews

As a whole, the focus of general music class will be the "behind the scenes" aspects of music.  If your child enjoys performing  music (singing, playing an instrument, etc.) then band and/or choir is the music special for them!

3rd Grade:  This is going to be our transition year getting ready for recorders!  We will continue to work on music terminology, note names, rhythm, and solfege.  Now, we will also start working on singing differently from each other and working on our music independence.  Music dictation (where the students hear a melody and then have to produce it on paper) will also be added to their musical repertoire.  Needless to say, it will be a fun and exciting year!

4th Grade:  RECORDERS!  We are participating in a rigorous program known as “Recorder Karate” where your children will earn belts as they progress as recorder players.  Look out for those colorful belts!  Also, if your child looses any recorder music or practice sheets, the PDFs are attached.  One recorder is provided per child at the beginning of the school year, but if the recorder breaks or is lost, an extra will be provided for $4.50.

5th Grade: We will be learning about many different concepts this year.  Film scores, musicals, music careers, and how music can be a part of everyday life will be our focus.  Group projects and presentations will be somewhat common as we teach one another the concepts we are learning.

6th Grade: This is the year we learn about the history of music and not just any style of music, but popular music!  We will start by learning about styles of music that started here in the United States in the 1900s like jazz, ragtime, blues, and bebop.  As we move through the decades we will start learning about music that is more familiar to them: Rock 'n' Roll, Country, Heavy Metal, Pop, and even Disco!  This year will not only have a lot of interesting listening examples, but we will learn about the grandfathers of our favorite music of today!

Grade Level Concerts

3rd and 4th graders will have their normal annual music concert similar to the annual concerts when 3rd and 4th grade were still at CIS.  These concerts are seperate from the Chipp Choir concert and are required for all 3rd and 4th grade students to attend.

Based on when your child is taking music during the 2018-19 school year will determine the date of their music concerts.  The dates and times are as follows.

First Semester General Music Students - January 9, 2019 at 6:30P.M. - Chippewa Intermediate School - Multi-Purpose Room

Second Semester General Music Students - May 23, 2019 at 6:30P.M. - Chippewa Jr/Sr High Performing Arts Center
